The population grew to 50 in 1841, and 200 by 1849, boosted by the building of Stanley, the new capital with better port facilities which was inaugurated in 1845. An archipelago of more than 740 islands just 480km east of Patagonia, the Falkland Islands are a natural paradise in the South Atlantic Ocean. The islands’ sheep stations (ranches) vary in size and may be owned by individual families or by companies based in Britain. Several hundred thousand sheep are kept on the islands, producing several thousand tons of wool annually as well as some mutton. Ranges of hills run east-west across the northern parts of the two main islands, reaching 2,312 feet (705 metres) at Mount Usborne in East Falkland.

Usually, no more than half of the eligible videos have a pre-roll advertisement, due to a lack of interested advertisers. Some YouTube videos have themselves had a direct effect on world events, such as Innocence of Muslims (2012) which spurred protests and related anti-American violence internationally. Journalist Virginia Heffernan stated in The New York Times that such videos have “surprising implications” for the dissemination of culture and even the future of classical music. As of 2018[update], public access to YouTube is blocked in many countries, including China, North Korea, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Eritrea, Sudan and South Sudan. In cases where the entire site is banned due to one particular video, YouTube will often agree to remove or limit access to that video in order to restore service.

On one of the two largest islands, East Falkland, the compact, appealing capital of Stanley, home to much of the islands’ population, is an attraction in its own right and a good place to base yourself for several days. Executive authority is vested in the British crown, and the islands’ government is headed by a governor appointed by the crown. The government began selling fishing licenses to foreigners in 1987, and the revenue generated from such sales became a major contributor to the economy. Such efforts have enabled the islands’ economy to enjoy sustained growth since the late 20th century.
